When you think of art, what comes to mind? Do you personally like art? If so, what kind of art? If we think about it, we all like art in some shape or form. For some, art is a beautiful oil painting on canvas. To another, art is expressed through dance, while to another, it is expressed through one's fingers as one molds and shapes new objects made with clay.

Did you know that written text can also be art? All of YOU are to be my new artists...I would like all of you to be artists with the freedom to express yourselves in any way that you would like. Every Sunday evening or Monday morning, I will post the topic for you to write about. Once you have read my topic, you will need to write your responses on your own blog. Your responses ought to be 1-2 paragraphs in length, but you should not spend more than 30 minutes writing them. Be sure to title each blog entry with "Topic #__:" and then your own title.

Next, you will need to comment on your classmates' blogs. Each student needs to leave a 2-3 sentences comment on two other students' blogs in order to receive credit per week.

Your responses and comments will need to be completed by 11:00 p.m. every Saturday. There will be no exception! Therefore, plan on completing this assignment before the Saturday day deadline in order to ensure that you receive full credit, which will be 10 points for each week. I will be leaving a comment on each blog I read to indicate to you that I have read your blog.

On a final note, these blogs are intended to be fun and to allow you to display your creativity. Be adventurous and express yourselves! Although we may occasionally use some of your blog entries for grammar practice, these blogs are primarily focused on content. Nonetheless, aim at your very best for grammatical accuracy. Above all, though, have fun!!

Topic #3: Favorite Character

Do you enjoy watching movies or reading books?  If any of you are like me, you probably enjoy doing both.  I always enjoy watching the movie after reading the book.  In my case, I usually discover that the book is better. :)

Think back to all of the movies and/or books you have watched or read.  Who is your favorite character?  Why do you like this character?

In my case, I have two that I really like.  The first is Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia.  I love his majestic nature.  He can be simultaneously gentle and fearsome.  He does not appear in the movie too often, but throughout the movie, you attain the sense that he is present and watching over.

Eliza Doolittle played by the all-too-famous Audrey Hepburn in the classic movie "My Fair Lady" is another character I really like.  I LOVE this movie from start to finish.  It was a musical movie based on the book Pygmalian written by George Bernard Shaw.  She is witty, funny, loving, and intelligent.  The obstacles she faces yet the happiness she exudes in spite of her impoverished state are qualities that deserve great respect.

How about you?  Who is your favorite character?  Why?

Topic #2: Tall or Short?

How many of you are content with your height?  Do you wish you were taller?  Shorter?  I am 5' 2", which equals approximately 155 cm.  When I was younger, I wanted to be at the height of 5' 7".  However, I realized that I was not going to get there despite all the milk I drank.  Therefore, I tried to establish a more realistic goal of 5' 4".  Sadly, I never made it there either.  Hence, I am at my current height of 5' 2".
My question for you this week is if you had to either be 3 feet or 8 feet, which would you choose and why?  I myself am heavily debating on this, for I always validated my short height with the benefit of wearing tall shoes.  However, at 3 feet, no matter how tall my shoes are, I will still be SHORT.  Therefore, I think I would rather be 8 feet.  I think there may be more benefits to being taller than short.  For instance, I will not have a problem reaching for items that are so high up.  That is always my demise now.  What about all of you?  Would you rather be 3 feet or 8 feet?  Why?

Topic #1: Your Birthday

When are your birthdays?  In my case, my birthday is in May, which is largely the reason why I was named "May."  Up until some years ago, I anxiously used to wait for my birthday because it was nice to have my "special day."  It was with anticipation that I waited to see what was going to happen to me on that day.  When I write "happen to me," I  mean what type of events loved ones would prepare for me.  Although I still feel like a 21-year-old in heart, the reality is that I am slightly (and only slightly!) older than that.  Therefore, I no longer anxiously wait for that day.

When it is my birthday, it is just another day but perhaps a little bit more.  I will be honest in that I do have a little expectation from certain people in my life such as my husband (poor husband).  Haha~!  If it passes quietly, I know that I will feel sad.

How about you?  How do you feel when it is your birthday?  Has your outlook on birthdays changed as you have gotten older?  Do you have any special plans for your next birthday?

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Advanced Composition 701!  As I have mentioned in class, I am so glad to see familiar faces from before, and I am also glad to see new faces.  It has been a pleasurable first weeks, and it has been fun for me getting to know each of you.  I look forward to getting closer as the semester progresses.  I hope you will enjoy writing your own blogs and take the dive to write creatively!
